Monaco signs IAEA deal to expand cancer radiotherapy access

The Principality has formalised its support for the IAEA's Rays of Hope initiative, signing an agreement with Director General Rafael Grossi on 16 September 2026.
On 16 September 2026, Monaco formalised its commitment to the International Atomic Energy Agency's Rays of Hope initiative by signing an agreement with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the agency's General Conference in Vienna. The accord is designed to sustain and strengthen Monaco's long-term support for expanding access to radiotherapy in countries where cancer treatment infrastructure remains critically limited.
The Monegasque delegation also took part in the 2026 Scientific Forum, held under the Rays of Hope theme, where representatives underlined the Principality's dual engagement with nuclear science: humanitarian on one side, environmental on the other. On the environmental front, the delegation highlighted Monaco's contributions to IAEA work on ocean monitoring and marine radioactivity, areas where the Principality's scientific institutions have built a recognised track record.
The agreement places Monaco among a small group of states that have made binding, multi-year pledges to the initiative rather than one-off contributions. For a Principality that positions itself as a leader in both ocean protection and global health diplomacy, the commitment adds a concrete dimension to that reputation.
