Monaco's Corps des Sapeurs-Pompiers is preparing to bring an autonomous drone into service, with the system expected to become operational later this month. Known internally as the autodrone, it will be available around the clock and will launch automatically whenever a fire engine is dispatched, flying to the location independently of its crew.
The aim is straightforward: give commanders a live aerial view of a fire, road accident or other incident before boots are on the ground. In a Principality where narrow streets, dense building and steep terrain can slow a response, even a few minutes' head start on assessing a scene, whether it is a blaze in a Monte-Carlo apartment block or a crash on the Moyenne Corniche, could shape how resources are allocated on arrival.
For residents and property owners, the move signals a broader push to modernise emergency response in one of Europe's most densely built territories. Monaco's fire service already operates with some of the fastest response times in Europe given its compact size, and an autonomous drone capable of reaching a scene ahead of ground crews adds a new layer of situational awareness without requiring additional personnel on call.
