Monaco cardiac centre on trial over 2018 patient death

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Three doctors and the Centre Cardio-thoracique de Monaco faced the correctional tribunal this week over a patient's death in 2018, with the verdict due on 15 December.

The correctional tribunal, presided over by Thierry Deschanels, heard arguments on 20 October in a case that could see the Centre Cardio-thoracique de Monaco convicted of involuntary homicide. Three doctors from the centre, along with the institution itself, are named in proceedings linked to the death of a 76-year-old patient on 1 May 2018.

The case marks a rare instance of a Monaco medical establishment facing criminal liability alongside individual practitioners, raising questions about internal protocols at one of the Principality's specialist cardiac facilities. For patients and families who rely on the centre, and for the wider medical community in Monaco, the outcome will carry weight well beyond this single case.

Judges have reserved their decision. The verdict is expected on 15 December, when the tribunal will rule on both the individual responsibility of the three doctors and the potential corporate liability of the centre itself.
