Monaco activates drought alert as rainfall falls 50% below normal

The Princely Government has triggered the first level of its drought protocol after rainfall across the Principality dropped more than 50% below seasonal norms since January 2026.
The Princely Government activated the "vigilance" alert level on Friday 24 July, the first tier of Monaco's official drought protocol, as the Principality records its driest start to the year in recent memory. Precipitation measured at Monaco's monitoring stations has fallen more than 50% below seasonal averages since January, a deficit that mirrors conditions across the wider Côte d'Azur region.
Rather than waiting for conditions to deteriorate further, the government has moved early to encourage collective action before more restrictive measures become necessary. The vigilance level is designed to prompt voluntary reductions in water use across households, businesses and public spaces, giving residents and property owners time to adjust before any mandatory restrictions are imposed.
For those living in the Principality, the immediate practical message is straightforward: review water consumption now. Garden irrigation, car washing and other non-essential uses are the obvious starting points. The government has signalled that it will escalate to higher alert levels if the rainfall deficit continues into late summer.
