Edan Diop earns Monaco trust after Bruges loan impresses

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

A productive loan spell at Cercle Bruges has helped Edan Diop break into Filipe Luis's midfield plans at AS Monaco.

Edan Diop's season on loan at Cercle Bruges last year appears to have been the making of him. The 22 year old midfielder, who made his professional debut for AS Monaco back in 2023, has returned to the Stade Louis II a different player, with two starts already under his belt this season as Filipe Luis reshapes his midfield options.

Those close to the squad say his decision making has sharpened considerably since his time in Belgium, where regular first team football gave him the minutes he lacked at Monaco. Coaches have noted a calmer, more controlled approach to his play, a quality that matters as the club juggles a congested autumn fixture list across Ligue 1 and European competition.

Diop will have the chance to build on that form on Thursday evening, when SC Fribourg visit the Stade Louis II for a 9pm kick off in the UEFA Conference League. With squad rotation inevitable given the schedule, a strong showing against the German side could further cement his place in Filipe Luis's plans heading into the busier winter period.
