Prince Albert II travelled to Aubagne on 30 April to join the French Foreign Legion in marking the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Camerone.
The annual Camerone Day commemoration drew Prince Albert II to Aubagne on Thursday 30 April, where he stood alongside the French Foreign Legion to honour a battle fought on the same date in 1863 in Mexico. The engagement at Camerone remains the defining moment in Legion history, and the ceremony held at its historic Aubagne headquarters is one of the most deeply observed traditions in the French military calendar.
This year the Legion chose "the nobility of service" as its guiding theme, a phrase that resonated with the Sovereign's own record of attending the commemoration over the years. The Prince's presence underlines the close ties between the Principality and the Legion, whose links with Monaco run well beyond ceremonial courtesy.
