Monégasque Valentin Vacherot defeated Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in Basel on Friday to reach the semi-finals.
Valentin Vacherot continued his strong autumn form with a three-set win over Denmark's Holger Rune at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday, 30 October. The Monégasque took the quarter-final 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, getting the better of the former world number four in a tight, physical contest that swung back and forth across the three sets.
The win sends Vacherot through to the semi-finals of one of the more prestigious stops on the indoor tour, continuing a run that has seen him climb steadily up the rankings this year. For a player who grew up on the courts of the Monaco Country Club, each deep run at ATP level is being watched closely back home, where tennis fans have followed his progress from the Challenger circuit to regular appearances against top-20 opposition.
Vacherot now turns his attention to the last four in Basel, where a place in the final would mark one of the biggest results of his career to date. His form this week adds to a growing sense that the Principality's tennis scene, long associated with the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters as a host venue, now has a genuine contender of its own to follow on tour.
