Solar Eclipse on 12 August: How to Watch Safely

Monaco's government is urging residents to use certified protective eyewear when viewing the solar eclipse on 12 August 2026.
A solar eclipse visible from Monaco is due on 12 August 2026, and the government has issued a public safety notice warning that looking at the sun without proper protection, even for a fraction of a second, can cause permanent retinal damage and irreversible vision loss.
Anyone wishing to observe the eclipse must use glasses specifically designed for solar viewing. These must carry the CE marking and conform to ISO 12312-2, the international standard for direct solar observation filters. Standard sunglasses, however dark, do not provide adequate protection and should not be used as a substitute.
Certified eclipse glasses are available from opticians, pharmacies and specialist retailers across the Principality ahead of the event.
