Roquebrune driver jailed after drink-drive arrest at Casino Square

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

A driver from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin was sentenced to prison by Monaco's correctional tribunal after being stopped with two grams of alcohol in his blood near the Casino.

Place du Casino was the scene of a late-night arrest after police stopped a vehicle reeking of alcohol and found the driver, a resident of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, with two grams of alcohol in his blood, more than four times the legal limit.

The case went straight to comparution immédiate before Monaco's tribunal correctionnel, where the judge did not mince words. "You are a danger to the public," he told the defendant before handing down an immediate custodial sentence.

The case is a reminder of how strictly drink-driving is treated in the Principality, where the compact road network around the Casino and Monte-Carlo sees heavy pedestrian traffic at all hours. Monaco's police maintain a visible presence in this area precisely because of the mix of nightlife, tourism and residential traffic that converges there.
