Roca Team crisis deepens as Mashburn fails to pay

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

AS Monaco Basket faces a critical CNOSF hearing on Thursday after investor Jamal Mashburn again failed to transfer promised funds, with a Ronaldinho-backed alternative now under urgent consideration.

The Roca Team's fight for Elite survival has taken a sharp turn after Jamal Mashburn, the American investor who had pledged to bankroll AS Monaco Basket, failed once more to transfer the funds he committed to the club. The timing could scarcely be worse: the club is due before the CNOSF on Thursday in a hearing that will determine whether it retains its place in Pro A for the coming season.

With Mashburn's backing now in serious doubt, club officials are working to activate a Plan B centred on an investment fund whose shareholders include Ronaldinho, the former Ballon d'Or winner. Negotiations are understood to be at an advanced stage, though whether a deal can be structured and presented to the CNOSF in time remains far from certain.

For residents and season-ticket holders at the Salle Gaston Médecin, the uncertainty is deeply unsettling. The Roca Team has been one of the most consistent names in French basketball for years, and the prospect of relegation or exclusion through financial irregularity rather than performance on the court will sting. Thursday's hearing will be decisive.
