Shōhei Imamura's Cannes-honoured 1989 drama Black Rain returns to screens in Monaco this week in a restored print.
The Monaco Audiovisual Institute will screen a restored print of Black Rain at the Théâtre des Variétés on Tuesday, October 27, at 7pm. The black-and-white film, directed by Shōhei Imamura, won the Technical Grand Prize at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and remains one of the most measured cinematic responses to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
The story follows a young woman and her family as they attempt to rebuild ordinary life in the years after the bombing, with the lingering threat of radiation sickness shaping every decision. Imamura's restrained, documentary-like approach to the material earned the film lasting critical standing in Japan and abroad, and this restoration gives Monaco audiences a rare chance to see it as originally intended on the big screen.
The screening forms part of the Institute's ongoing programme of classic and restored cinema at the Théâtre des Variétés, a venue that has become a fixture for residents interested in film history beyond the commercial circuit. Tickets and timing details are available directly through the Institute ahead of Tuesday's showing.
