Prince Albert II attends Dakar Youth Olympic Games

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Prince Albert II travelled to Senegal for the Youth Olympic Games, the first major Olympic event held on African soil.

Prince Albert II joined young athletes and officials in Dakar this week as Senegal became the first African nation to host a major Olympic event, the Youth Olympic Games. As a longstanding member of the International Olympic Committee, the Sovereign Prince has followed the build-up to these Games closely and was present to witness the atmosphere around the opening events.

The visit also underlines a diplomatic relationship between Monaco and Senegal that stretches back to the reign of Prince Rainier III. Monaco has maintained cultural and cooperative ties with Dakar for decades, and the Prince's presence at these Games reinforces that connection at a moment of significant pride for Senegal and the wider African sporting community.

For Monaco, the trip reflects the Principality's continued engagement with the Olympic movement beyond its own borders, an area where Prince Albert II has remained personally active throughout his reign.
