National Council moves to modernise Monaco organ donation law

Monaco's National Council has voted on a proposal to overhaul organ donation legislation unchanged since 1984, including plans for a national consent register.
On 11 June, the National Council passed a proposed law aimed at bringing Monaco's post-mortem organ donation framework into the 21st century. The existing legislation dates back to 1984 and elected members have argued it is overdue a thorough revision.
Among the key measures proposed is the creation of a national register allowing residents to record their acceptance or refusal of organ donation after death. The move would give Monaco a clearer, more transparent system in line with frameworks already operating in neighbouring countries.
For Monaco residents, the practical implication is significant: rather than leaving the decision to family members at an already difficult moment, individuals would be able to register their wishes formally and in advance. The proposal now moves through the legislative process before any changes can take effect.
