Monaco Parkings staff await response after September pay protest

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Monaco Parkings employees are pressing the government for a pay rise after 15 years without one, following a large demonstration on 23 September.

Staff at Monaco Parkings took to the streets on 23 September in a significant show of frustration over pay that has not moved in 15 years, according to the agents themselves. Their case centres on the physical demands of the job and the range of tasks they are expected to cover, from managing car parks across the Principality to handling the public-facing pressures that come with it.

The Monegasque government has responded by pointing to a recent increase in night-shift pay, along with the launch of a new workplace barometer designed to measure factors including workload and job strain. Whether these steps go far enough to satisfy the agents, who are civil servants, remains the open question as both sides continue discussions.

For residents and visitors who rely on Monaco's public car parks daily, from Fontvieille to Monte-Carlo, the dispute is a reminder of the workforce behind a service often taken for granted. With the government's barometer now in motion, staff will be watching closely to see whether it translates into the salary revaluation they have been seeking for well over a decade.
