Monaco opens helicopter route to Nice to competition

A new sovereign ordinance sets out how airlines can seek authorisation to run scheduled helicopter flights between Monaco and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport.
Sovereign Ordinance No. 12.167, published in the latest Journal de Monaco, establishes the formal procedure for airlines seeking to operate scheduled helicopter services on the Monaco to Nice route. The move opens the door to competition on a link that has for decades been dominated by a single operator running flights from Héliport de Monaco in Fontvieille.
For residents and property owners who rely on the eight minute hop to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, the change could mean more choice on departure times and potentially sharper pricing, though no new operator has yet been named. The route is heavily used by business travellers and second home owners connecting to international flights, making any shift in service levels a matter of practical interest well beyond aviation circles.
The ordinance sets out the criteria an airline must meet to be authorised, covering safety standards, operational capacity and slot allocation at both the Fontvieille heliport and Nice airport. Monaco's government has not indicated a timeline for when a rival operator might begin services, but the regulatory groundwork now exists for a formal application process to begin.
