Monaco expands nurses' duties under new health order

A new ministerial order allows experienced nurses and medical auxiliaries in Monaco to take on tasks previously reserved for doctors.
Ministerial Order No. 2026-523, published in the Journal de Monaco on 25 September, changes the rules governing which healthcare professionals can carry out specific medical acts. The order allows nurses and other medical auxiliaries to take on an expanded range of responsibilities that were previously the preserve of doctors, provided they meet experience requirements set out in the text.
The move is designed to encourage greater cooperation between different tiers of healthcare staff, a shift that mirrors changes already adopted in neighbouring France and other European health systems facing pressure on doctor availability. For residents, the practical effect should be faster access to certain routine procedures and consultations, particularly at moments when demand on Monaco's medical services is high.
The order amends existing Monegasque regulations rather than introducing an entirely new framework, meaning hospitals and clinics operating in the Principality, including the Princess Grace Hospital Centre, will need to update internal protocols to reflect which staff are now authorised to perform which procedures.
