Monaco establishes diplomatic ties with Bhutan

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Principality has formalised diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Bhutan, citing shared commitments to environmental protection and human well-being.

On 11 June 2026, Monaco and the Kingdom of Bhutan established formal diplomatic relations, extending the Principality's network of bilateral ties to a nation that shares its priorities on environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Bhutan is the only country in the world to operate with a negative carbon balance, and anchors its national policy in the concept of Gross National Happiness, a framework that places ecological preservation and human welfare above purely economic measures. For Monaco, whose own environmental commitments range from marine conservation to its National Pact for Energy Transition, the alignment with Bhutan's philosophy is a natural fit rather than a diplomatic formality.

The announcement, made by the Monaco Government, adds a symbolically significant partner to the Principality's diplomatic roster. Both states are small in territory yet carry disproportionate weight in international conversations on climate and biodiversity, making the relationship one with practical as well as ceremonial value.
