Monaco and Strasbourg museums hold cultural round-table

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Museum professionals from Monaco and Strasbourg met for a round-table on the role of cultural institutions, held as Monaco nears the end of its Council of Europe presidency.

Curators and museum directors from Monaco travelled to Strasbourg this week for a round-table discussion on the changing role of cultural institutions in modern society. The meeting took place at Strasbourg's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, timed to coincide with the 51st Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.

The gathering comes as the Principality approaches the final weeks of its presidency of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, a role that has seen Monaco host and participate in a series of cultural and diplomatic exchanges across the continent. For Monaco's museum sector, the Strasbourg discussion offered a chance to compare approaches with French counterparts on questions of public engagement, heritage preservation and the institutional response to shifting visitor expectations.

While no formal partnership or funding commitment was announced, the exchange underscores Monaco's continued use of cultural diplomacy alongside its political presidency duties. Residents with an interest in the Principality's museums, including the Oceanographic Museum and the New National Museum of Monaco, may see further collaborative projects emerge from these ongoing discussions with European institutions.
