Monaco and FAO expand cereal programme for Senegal

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Monaco has strengthened its partnership with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation to support cereal production and women's economic independence in Senegal.

The Principality has renewed its cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations on a programme designed to improve farming practices for a cereal crop central to food security in Senegal. The initiative, backed through Monaco's international cooperation funding, aims to raise yields and quality while opening new income opportunities for the women who dominate the crop's production and processing.

Monaco has long positioned development cooperation as a pillar of its foreign policy, channelling funds through its Department of International Cooperation into projects across West Africa and beyond. This latest FAO partnership builds on existing ties between the Principality and Senegal, where previous Monegasque-backed schemes have focused on water access and rural livelihoods.

For residents following Monaco's diplomatic footprint, the announcement reflects a consistent strategy: rather than large-scale aid, the Principality tends to back targeted, technical programmes with measurable outcomes, often with a gender-equality component attached. No figures on funding levels or programme duration were disclosed alongside the announcement.
