Fati's paradox: 11 goals without a starting spot

By Laurent Duval, MonacoViews Editorial

Ansu Fati has scored 11 goals for AS Monaco this season despite rarely starting, making him one of the squad's most clinical finishers from the bench.

Eleven goals and a place on the substitutes' bench — Ansu Fati's season at AS Monaco defies straightforward explanation. The Spanish forward has made a habit of arriving late in matches and making an immediate impact, a record that puts him among the most effective finishers in the squad despite his limited time on the pitch.

The contradiction at the heart of his campaign is that his style of play does not sit comfortably within the tactical framework favoured by the coaching staff, which goes some way to explaining why he so rarely gets the nod from the start. Yet his numbers are difficult to ignore, and the club is understood to be keen on retaining him beyond the current season.

For AS Monaco, the question heading into the summer is how to reconcile that statistical productivity with a profile that does not quite fit the system. Fati represents a genuine puzzle — a player too decisive to discard, yet too misaligned to be a regular starter.
