A 39-year-old man from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin has been sentenced to one month in prison after he was stopped by police near Place du Casino with a blood alcohol level almost four times the legal limit. The court also imposed a three-year ban on driving in Monaco.
The case drew attention because the driver had only recently recovered his licence following a seven-month suspension for a similar offence. Repeat drink-driving cases of this kind are relatively rare in the Principality, where the compact road network around Casino Square and the surrounding Golden Square is closely monitored by Monaco's police force.
For residents and visitors in the Casino district, the case is a reminder of how strictly traffic law is enforced in this part of Monaco, particularly late at night when nightlife traffic around the Place du Casino and nearby hotels tends to peak.
