Chef faces criminal trial over 2023 Monaco-Ville restaurant stabbings

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Rocco Emilio Tramontana, a 64-year-old Italian cook, stands trial at Monaco's criminal tribunal this week on charges of attempted murder and death threats.

Monaco's criminal tribunal opened proceedings on Tuesday 30 June in the case of Rocco Emilio Tramontana, a 64-year-old Italian national who worked as a cook at L'Estragon restaurant in Monaco-Ville. He faces charges of attempted murder and death threats, with the trial scheduled to run until Friday 3 July 2026.

The charges stem from an incident on 8 August 2023, when Tramontana allegedly attacked a colleague with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen, before attempting to turn on a second member of staff. Both victims were employees at the same restaurant.

L'Estragon sits within the historic old town, one of the Principality's most visited areas. The case is a reminder that Monaco's criminal justice system, though rarely tested by violent crime, operates with full tribunal proceedings for the most serious offences. A verdict is expected before the end of the week.
