Budget debate erupts as Government clashes with National Council

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Tensions escalated during Wednesday's opening session of Monaco's 2026 supplementary budget discussions, with the debate suspended following a confrontation over parliamentary scrutiny.

Elected members of the National Council met with representatives of the Prince's Government on Wednesday to open discussions on the rectified budget for 2026. However, the session took an unexpected turn when proceedings were abruptly suspended following a confrontation between the two bodies.

The dispute centred on the Government's approach to parliamentary oversight. Minister of State Christophe Mirmand delivered a firm response to the Finance and National Economy Committee's report, triggering the tense exchange. Members of the Haute Assemblée had already signalled their intention to push back on aspects of the government's proposals, and Wednesday's confrontation suggests the coming week of negotiations will be particularly fraught.

With a vote scheduled for Tuesday 13 October, approval of the rectified budget is far from assured. Any changes agreed this month will shape spending commitments for the remainder of the year and have real implications for residents and businesses across the Principality.
