Cliff-side gardens, the Roseraie, the Exotic Garden

Parks and gardens in Monaco

For one of the world's most densely built territories, Monaco maintains a remarkable collection of parks and gardens. The Jardin Exotique, perched on the western cliffs 60 metres above the Hercule port, holds over 6,000 cacti and succulent species from arid zones around the world, many of enormous size. The Saint-Martin Gardens wrap the base of Le Rocher beneath the Oceanographic Museum, with cliff-edge terraces looking south over the port.

Fontvieille's Roseraie Princesse Grace is a formal English garden beside the helipad with around 4,000 rose bushes across over 300 varieties. The Japanese Garden (Jardin du Souvenir) on the eastern edge of Larvotto, designed by landscape architect Yasuo Beppu and opened in 1994, offers a quiet contrast to the busy boulevard alongside. Parc Princesse Antoinette above Fontvieille provides a large public green space with play areas, a pétanque court and a small farm.

Frequently asked

Is the Jardin Exotique worth visiting?

The Jardin Exotique is genuinely one of the most unusual botanic gardens in Europe. The cliff-side setting, the scale of many specimens (some cacti are several metres tall), and the views over Monaco and the Mediterranean make it a distinctive visit. The adjacent Grotte de l'Observatoire is included in the ticket price.
