YCM's Tuiga and Viola to sail US East Coast for America's 250th

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Yacht Club de Monaco is sending two of its historic sailing vessels to the United States for a tall ships gathering marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Yacht Club de Monaco will have a visible presence at the landmark maritime celebrations being organised along the US East Coast this summer, with two of its classic sailing vessels, the Tuiga and the Viola, confirmed for the campaign.

The Tuiga, a 1909 gaff-rigged schooner and one of the most recognised vessels in the YCM's fleet, will make the Atlantic crossing alongside the Viola to take part in events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The gathering is expected to draw tall ships and heritage vessels from across the world.

For the Yacht Club de Monaco, whose base sits at Port Hercule, the voyage represents one of the more ambitious deployments of its historic fleet in recent years. Both vessels are regularly seen in Mediterranean regattas and classic yacht events, but a transatlantic campaign of this scale is a rarer undertaking. Monégasque residents with an interest in maritime heritage will be able to follow the campaign as it unfolds over the coming weeks.
