Villa Sauber to expand sevenfold in three-year rebuild

Monaco's Nouveau Musée National will close Villa Sauber from September 2026 for a major restoration and extension, growing the site from 600 to over 4,000 square metres.
Villa Sauber, one of the two sites of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, is set to undergo a substantial transformation beginning in September 2026. The three-year project, scheduled for completion in September 2029, will see the building's floor area increase from approximately 600 square metres to more than 4,000 square metres, a near sevenfold expansion that will fundamentally change what the museum can offer.
The works combine full restoration of the existing Belle Époque villa with a major new extension. Once complete, the museum will be able to display its permanent collections on a continuous basis, something the current footprint has never allowed, while also hosting large-scale temporary exhibitions of the kind that have historically required Monaco to look elsewhere.
For residents and property owners around the Avenue Princesse Grace, the three-year construction period will bring the usual disruption of a significant public building project. The museum's other venue, Villa Paloma in Saint-Roman, will continue to operate throughout. The government has not yet announced a detailed programme for Villa Paloma during the closure, but further scheduling information is expected ahead of the September start date.
