Monaco hosts International Hydrographic Organization assembly as maritime technology evolves

The Principality welcomed delegates for the IHO's fourth general assembly, addressing digital transformation in maritime navigation amid global tensions.

The Principality welcomed international maritime experts for the International Hydrographic Organization's fourth general assembly, held from 20 to 23 April 2026. Monaco's delegation participated in discussions that addressed the rapidly changing landscape of ocean mapping and navigation.

Plenary sessions focused on the digital transformation reshaping maritime operations, particularly the integration of artificial intelligence into nautical instruments and the widespread digitisation of oceanographic data. These technological advances come at a time when international tensions are increasingly affecting maritime regions worldwide.

A significant outcome of the assembly was the formal establishment of a dedicated GEBCO secretariat within Monaco. The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans initiative will now operate from the IHO's existing offices on Quai Antoine Ier, strengthening the Principality's role as a hub for international maritime cooperation.

This development reinforces Monaco's longstanding commitment to ocean science and maritime affairs, building on its historical relationship with the International Hydrographic Organization, which has maintained its headquarters in the Principality since 1921.
