Second suspect package in two days disrupts Place d'Armes

Place d'Armes was evacuated at around midday on Wednesday 15 July after a second suspect package was found in two days, following a similar incident at Place des Moulins the previous evening.
Place d'Armes, the busy square at the foot of the Rock that serves as the Principality's main outdoor market, was evacuated at around noon on Wednesday 15 July after an unattended bag was reported. Sapeurs-pompiers and security services cleared the area while the package was assessed and made safe.
The incident follows a near-identical alert the previous evening at Place des Moulins in Monte-Carlo, where a suspect item also prompted an evacuation. Two such episodes within 24 hours will raise questions for residents and the many visitors moving through Monaco's public spaces in the heart of summer.
Authorities have not released details of what either package contained or whether the two incidents are believed to be connected. Residents and those with plans to visit either location should expect the possibility of short-notice cordons if further alerts occur, and are reminded to report any unattended luggage to the Police Princière immediately.
