Residents asked to shape Monaco's water strategy

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Monaco government is consulting residents on long-term water management as climate pressures and supply tensions prompt a formal public engagement exercise.

Water security has moved firmly up the government's agenda, with the Principality now calling on residents to contribute their views to a strategic review of how Monaco manages its water supply. The consultation follows a period of visible strain on resources, including usage restrictions introduced in 2023, which marked the first time such measures had been applied in the Principality.

Climate change is identified as the driving force behind increasing pressure on availability, with unpredictable rainfall patterns and rising temperatures compounding the challenge of securing adequate supply for a densely populated territory with no natural reservoirs of its own. Monaco already relies on a combination of imported water and desalination, and the government has acknowledged that existing efforts, while substantial, are no longer sufficient on their own.

The public consultation gives residents, building managers and property owners a direct channel to feed into the planning process before longer-term measures are decided. For those living in the Principality, it is a practical reminder that water management here is not an abstract environmental concern but a concrete infrastructure question with real implications for daily life and, ultimately, property values.
