Prince Albert I Prize awarded to young scientists at UNESCO

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Monaco's Prince Albert I Prize has been presented to young researchers at UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme council session in Paris.

The Prince Albert I Prize was awarded this week to a new cohort of young scientists during the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme's intergovernmental council meeting. The prize, presented under the patronage of the Principality, recognises outstanding early-career research into the relationship between human activity and natural ecosystems.

The MAB Programme, established in 1971, promotes sustainable development models that balance ecosystem protection with the wellbeing of local populations and their social and cultural realities. At the same session, the council approved the designation of 14 new biosphere reserves, extending the programme's global network as part of its updated action plan.

Monaco's long-standing engagement with UNESCO's environmental science agenda reflects the Principality's broader commitment to ocean and ecological research, a thread running from Prince Albert I's pioneering oceanographic expeditions through to the work of the current Prince Albert II Foundation today.
