Prince Albert honours 76 pupils for Monégasque language skills

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Seventy-six students were recognised at the Mairie de Monaco on 17 June 2026 for their results in the annual Monégasque language competition.

Prince Albert II joined Mayor Georges Marsan in the Cour d'honneur of the Mairie de Monaco on Wednesday 17 June to present awards to 76 pupils who excelled in this year's Monégasque language competition. The ceremony brought together students from across the Principality's school system, recognising those who have made the greatest effort to learn and preserve Monaco's native tongue.

The annual competition forms part of a broader push to keep the Monégasque language alive among younger generations. With fewer than a few thousand fluent speakers remaining, the contest carries real cultural weight, and the presence of both the Prince and the Mayor underlines just how seriously the Principality treats the subject. For families with children in Monaco's schools, the event is a marker of the calendar - and a reminder that language remains central to Monégasque identity.
