National Council challenges government over 2026 budget

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

National Council members and the Prince's Government began debating the amended 2026 budget on Wednesday, with a vote expected next Tuesday far from guaranteed.

Elected members of the National Council sat down with representatives of the Prince's Government on Wednesday to open discussions on the rectified budget for 2026. The session marks the start of what is expected to be a tense week of negotiations before a vote scheduled for Tuesday 13 October.

While the timetable has been set, approval from the Haute Assemblée is not a formality. Members have signalled they intend to push back on aspects of the government's proposals, raising the prospect of amendments or a delayed outcome before next week's scheduled vote.

For residents and businesses watching the Principality's public finances, the rectified budget matters beyond the chamber on Boulevard Albert 1er. Any changes agreed this month will shape spending commitments for the remainder of the year, from infrastructure projects to public services, making the coming days a test of how the Council and the government work through their differences.
