National Council approves new law on sport in Monaco

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Bill No. 1,088, approved on Thursday, sets out a new legal framework covering safety, access and governance of sport across the Principality.

The National Council has approved Bill No. 1,088, a wide-ranging piece of legislation that reshapes how sport is organised and regulated in Monaco. Passed on Thursday 5 November, the law sets out clearer responsibilities for public authorities, sporting federations and local associations, replacing a patchwork of older rules with a single, modern framework.

For residents, the changes are likely to be felt most in how clubs and associations operate day to day, from safety standards at training facilities to the processes federations must follow when organising events. The reform also places greater emphasis on widening participation, meaning amateur clubs and community sport groups could see new support structures as the law is implemented.

While the full text covers technical and administrative detail, the broader signal is one of Monaco formalising its approach to sport beyond its high-profile events such as the Monaco Grand Prix or AS Monaco fixtures. Anyone involved in running a club, coaching, or organising sporting activities in the Principality should expect follow-up guidance from the relevant ministries as the legislation moves into force.
