Municipal election spending capped at €216,000 per list

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

New rules in the Journal de Monaco set out how much candidates may spend contesting the Principality's municipal elections.

New regulations published in the Journal de Monaco set out spending limits for candidates contesting Monaco's municipal elections, with a full list of candidates permitted to spend up to €216,000 on its campaign. The figure covers everything from printed materials to public meetings in the run-up to polling day.

Independent candidates face a separate, lower ceiling under the same rules, reflecting the smaller scale of a solo campaign compared with a full list contesting seats across the Conseil Communal. The council oversees local services, planning decisions and municipal budgets for areas including Monaco-Ville, La Condamine, Fontvieille and Monte-Carlo, giving its members real influence over day-to-day life in the Principality.

With Monaco's electorate limited to Monegasque nationals registered to vote, a pool numbering only a few thousand, the permitted spending works out to a notable sum per voter. The rules offer a rare official glimpse into the financial scale behind what is, on paper, a small-scale local contest.
