Monaco studio behind Astro Boy reboot heads to TF1 in 2027

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Shibuya Productions, the Monaco-based animation company founded by Cédric Biscay, has unveiled first footage of its Astro Boy reboot at the Annecy film festival ahead of a TF1 broadcast in 2027.

More than a decade in the making, the reboot of Osamu Tezuka's classic manga Astro Boy is entering its final stretch. Shibuya Productions, headquartered in the Principality, screened the first images of the series at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this month, marking a significant milestone for what has been an unusually long and ambitious production for a Monaco-based studio.

Cédric Biscay, who founded Shibuya Productions in Monaco, has been the driving force behind the project since its inception. The series is scheduled to air on TF1 in 2027, giving the studio roughly another year of production work before delivery. Biscay has noted that showing the finished series at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival would represent a full circle moment for a project that began in the Principality.

Shibuya Productions has built a reputation in Monaco as one of the few companies operating at the intersection of Japanese animation and European broadcasting. The Astro Boy commission, one of the most recognisable franchises in animation history, represents the highest-profile project the studio has taken on and a considerable calling card for Monaco's creative industry sector.
