Monaco-Spain exhibition tours five centuries of shared history

A travelling exhibition marking 500 years of Monaco-Spanish relations opened in Madrid in June and is now touring venues across Spain.
Launched on 1 June 2026 at the Pavillon Villanueva within Madrid's Real Jardín Botánico, the exhibition "Monaco et l'Espagne, cinq siècles d'histoire partagée" brings together archival documents, artworks and heritage objects tracing the political, diplomatic, cultural and scientific ties between the two countries. The opening was attended by members of the Royal Family, marking the occasion as one of the centrepieces of the broader commemorative year.
The show is conceived as a touring exhibition, meaning it will travel to further Spanish venues beyond Madrid before the commemorative programme concludes. For Monaco residents and property owners with connections to Spain, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see primary-source material from the Principality's archives displayed abroad, covering a relationship that stretches back to the early sixteenth century.
The commemorative year reflects an ongoing effort by the Monaco Government to reinforce bilateral ties with Spain at an institutional level, pairing cultural diplomacy with tangible public programming rather than purely ceremonial gestures.
