Monaco population nears 39,000 as French residents decline

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The IMSEE 2025 census shows Monaco's resident population approaching 39,000, with a continuing fall in French nationals and a measurably ageing demographic.

The Principality's official statistics body, IMSEE, has published its 2025 population census, placing Monaco's resident count just short of 39,000. The figure marks a continued upward trend in overall headcount, even as the composition of that population shifts in ways that will interest property owners and long-term residents alike.

The most notable shift is the sustained decline in French nationals, who have historically formed the largest single group among Monaco's non-Monégasque residents. That trend is now sufficiently consistent to be read as structural rather than cyclical. At the same time, the data confirms what many residents will have observed informally: Monaco's population is ageing, with the proportion of older residents growing relative to younger age groups.

For those with property or business interests in the Principality, the census carries practical implications. An ageing population typically reshapes demand for services, healthcare infrastructure and residential configurations, while a declining French cohort may reflect the cumulative effect of cross-border cost pressures, hybrid working patterns or competition from other low-tax jurisdictions for that segment of mobile residents. IMSEE's full report provides the breakdown by nationality, age band and district that underpins these headline findings.
