Monaco Opens Diplomatic Ties with Republic of Mauritius

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Principality has established formal diplomatic relations with Mauritius, linking two small states with a shared commitment to ocean conservation and blue economy policy.

Monaco and the Republic of Mauritius formalised diplomatic relations on 27 August 2026, bringing together two small states whose public policy has long centred on the protection of marine ecosystems. For the Principality, the agreement extends a network of partnerships built around ocean governance and sustainable development.

Mauritius has made its blue economy strategy a cornerstone of national policy, combining economic growth with the preservation of its Indian Ocean marine environment. That approach mirrors priorities Monaco has pursued through institutions such as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and its engagement with international ocean forums.

The establishment of relations opens the way for cooperation on shared environmental and maritime interests, at a moment when both states are deepening their commitments under global ocean protection frameworks.
