Monaco marks World Drowning Prevention Day with joint safety drive

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Princess Charlene Foundation joined forces with several Monegasque institutions on 25 July to raise public awareness of water safety and life-saving techniques.

On 25 July, the Princess Charlene Foundation coordinated a public awareness campaign in the Principality to mark World Drowning Prevention Day, with multiple Monegasque institutions taking part in the initiative. The event focused on educating residents and visitors about preventive measures and the basic rescue gestures that can make the difference between life and death in a drowning emergency.

Drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death worldwide, a statistic that sits uneasily in a coastal community where the sea is central to daily life and summer tourism. For those spending time on Monaco's beaches, aboard yachts or around the Port Hercule area, the campaign serves as a timely reminder that even confident swimmers can find themselves in difficulty quickly in open water.

The Princess Charlene Foundation has made water safety one of its core missions since its founding, running learn-to-swim and drowning-prevention programmes across Monaco and internationally. The involvement of wider Monegasque institutions in this year's event signals a broader, coordinated push to embed a safety culture among the Principality's population and the many visitors who arrive each summer.
