Monaco marks 82 years since liberation from German occupation

A commemorative parade through the Principality on 3 September marked 82 years since Allied forces freed Monaco from German occupation in 1944.
Thursday's ceremony brought together Monegasque, French and Italian citizens alongside members of the Association MonacoUSA to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Principality's liberation from German occupation on 3 September 1944. Participants paid tribute to Allied forces and local Resistance fighters who played a central role in freeing Monaco during the final stages of the Second World War in Western Europe.
Members of the Association MonacoUSA attended dressed in authentic 1944 US military uniforms, adding a visual weight to the occasion that connected the commemorations directly to the period being remembered. The annual event serves as one of the few moments in the civic calendar where residents, descendants of Resistance fighters and diplomatic communities come together in a shared act of remembrance.
For Monaco, the liberation holds particular significance given the Principality's position between Italian and German-held territories during the occupation years. The ceremony remains a fixture in the municipal calendar and draws participation from across the three bordering nations whose histories are bound to that moment in September 1944.
