Monaco Launches New-Format Driving Licence With 15-Year Renewal

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Principality has introduced a redesigned driving licence made from recyclable material, fitted with advanced security features and requiring renewal every 15 years.

From July 2026, Monaco residents will receive a redesigned driving licence that is more compact than the current version and produced in a recyclable material. The new card incorporates a visual electronic certificate on its reverse side, allowing authorities to verify authenticity quickly during roadside or border checks.

Alongside the format change, the Principality is introducing a mandatory 15-year renewal cycle for the document, bringing it in line with the passport and national identity card. The government has described the process as a straightforward administrative formality rather than a new test or assessment of any kind.

For residents who already hold a valid Monaco licence, no immediate action is required until their renewal falls due. The move reflects a broader shift across European jurisdictions towards standardised, machine-readable driving documents with stronger anti-fraud protections.
