Monaco establishes diplomatic ties with Bhutan

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

The Principality has formalised diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Bhutan, linking two small states that share strong environmental and sustainability commitments.

Monaco and Bhutan established formal diplomatic relations on 15 June 2026, bringing together two of the world's smallest sovereign states around a shared set of priorities. Bhutan, nestled in the eastern Himalayas, is the only country in the world to maintain a carbon-negative economy, and has long built its public policy around the principle of Gross National Happiness, which places human wellbeing and nature conservation ahead of purely economic measures.

The alignment with Monaco's own environmental agenda is deliberate. The Principality has made climate action and ocean protection central to its foreign policy for years, and the new relationship with Thimphu opens a channel for cooperation between two governments that punch well above their size on global sustainability issues.

For Monaco residents and institutions, the development signals a continued broadening of the Principality's diplomatic network beyond its traditional European and Mediterranean sphere. It also reinforces Monaco's position as a credible voice on environmental governance at the international level.
