Monaco Energy Boat Challenge returns for 13th edition in July

More than 1,000 students and 53 teams will compete at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge from 8 to 11 July 2026, pushing maritime clean energy forward.

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge returns to Port Hercule from 8 to 11 July 2026, with its 13th edition shaping up as the most technically ambitious yet. Over 1,000 students representing 53 teams will gather to test vessels powered by hydrogen, foil technology and graphene-based systems, each design aimed at reducing or eliminating fossil fuel dependency at sea.

The competition, organised under the auspices of the Yacht Club de Monaco, has grown steadily into one of the most credible student engineering events on the Mediterranean calendar. For residents and marina users, the days surrounding the event typically bring a concentration of prototype craft into the port and a series of open technical demonstrations worth watching from the quayside.

Hydrogen propulsion and hydrofoil hull designs are expected to attract the most attention this year, reflecting where serious maritime R&D investment is currently flowing. Graphene applications in hull construction are a newer addition to the mix, with several teams reportedly exploring its weight and conductivity properties for energy storage. The results from competitions like this one have a track record of feeding into real commercial development cycles within a few years.
