Monaco court hears €3bn inheritance dispute over Burlakov estate

A Monaco courtroom spent three hours examining a €3 billion inheritance dispute within the family of a Russian businessman who died in 2021.
The Monaco Palace of Justice was the setting this week for a lengthy hearing in one of the largest private inheritance disputes to pass through the Principality's courts in recent memory. At stake is the estate of a Russian businessman who had been resident in Monaco since 2006 and who died from Covid-19 in 2021, leaving behind a fortune estimated at around €3 billion.
The case pits his widow and daughters against his sister and brother-in-law, with three hours of argument presented before the court on the division of assets. Details of the specific holdings involved, which are understood to include property, investments and business interests, have not been made public, and the court has not yet issued a ruling.
For Monaco, where high-net-worth residents from Russia and elsewhere have settled in significant numbers over the past two decades, the case is a reminder of how succession law in the Principality intersects with international wealth. Monaco's legal framework for inheritance, which differs from that of neighbouring France, often becomes central in disputes involving residents whose assets and family structures span multiple jurisdictions. A further hearing or judgment is expected in due course.
