Maillot's Roméo et Juliette marks 30 years at Salle Garnier

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Jean-Christophe Maillot brings four performances of his 1996 production to the Salle Garnier, marking three decades since the ballet's creation.

Jean-Christophe Maillot, director and choreographer of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, returns to the Salle Garnier this season with four performances of his Roméo et Juliette, the production that has defined his career since its creation in 1996. The piece has now been staged more than 400 times across stages worldwide, making it one of the most travelled works in the company's repertoire.

For Monaco's cultural calendar, the anniversary run is a reminder of how deeply the Ballets de Monte-Carlo remain tied to the Principality's identity on the international dance scene. The Salle Garnier, with its intimate scale and gilded Belle Époque interior, gives the production a different texture than the larger opera houses where it has toured, and regulars of the venue will recognise how Maillot's choreography plays against that architecture.

For residents and visitors planning around the Casino Square area, the four evenings are expected to draw strong demand given the production's anniversary status and the limited capacity of the Garnier. Anyone with an interest in the company's history, or in Maillot's long tenure shaping Monaco's reputation in contemporary dance, will want to secure seats early once dates are confirmed by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo.
