Lacoste breaks silence after custody over corruption charges

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

Thierry Lacoste, once Prince Albert II's close friend and lawyer, has denounced as grotesque the charges he faces following two and a half days in police custody.

Thierry Lacoste, for decades a trusted figure in Prince Albert II's inner circle, has spoken out for the first time since being indicted in early September on charges of trafic d'influence, corruption and association de malfaiteurs. The lawyer spent two and a half days in garde à vue in Monaco before the charges were formally laid, a period he describes as having left him shaken but resolved to fight the case.

In his first public comments since the indictment, Lacoste called the accusations grotesque and said his legal team will file for their annulment. He went further, suggesting that his prosecution serves agendas hidden from view, a claim that will draw scrutiny given his decades-long proximity to the Sovereign Prince and his former role advising on sensitive matters within the Palace's orbit.

The case marks one of the most significant legal proceedings to touch Monaco's governing establishment in recent years, given Lacoste's standing as a longtime confidant of Albert II. For residents and observers of the Principality's institutions, the outcome will be watched closely, both for what it reveals about the conduct alleged and for what it might expose about the workings of power within Monaco's small, tightly networked elite.

No trial date has yet been set, and Lacoste's lawyers are expected to pursue procedural challenges to the indictment in the coming weeks. The Principality's judicial authorities have not commented publicly beyond confirming the charges themselves.
