The team of specialist gardeners tends a collection of roughly 10,000 plants, with a particular focus on rare and endangered succulent species whose genetic material they are actively working to protect.
The work is painstaking by design. Staff propagate specimens with a precision they compare to patisserie, where small errors in technique or timing can compromise an entire batch. For the rarest plants in the collection, that attention to detail is not merely professional pride but a conservation necessity: some of the cacti and succulents held here exist in only small numbers in their native habitats.
The Jardin Exotique, perched on Boulevard du Jardin Exotique in the Moneghetti district, has long been one of Monaco's more serious horticultural institutions. The work now being carried out at its botanical centre gives that reputation a sharper scientific edge, positioning the Principality as a contributor to global plant conservation efforts rather than simply the custodian of a scenic hillside garden.
