The Foire attractions de Monaco opened its gates on Friday 16 October, marking the return of one of the Principality's longest-running seasonal traditions. Set up in Fontvieille as it has been for years, the fair draws residents and visitors alike for its rides, stalls and the familiar faces of the forains who run them season after season.
For many of these fairground families, the event is as much about watching Monaco's social life unfold as it is about running attractions. Several have worked the same pitch for generations, and they speak of regulars who return year after year, sometimes with different company each time, and of the small dramas and friendships that play out around their stands. Their observations, built up over decades of standing at the same spot each autumn, offer a different lens on the Principality than the one usually seen in official accounts.
The fair remains a fixture of the Monegasque calendar, drawing families from across the border in Beausoleil and Roquebrune as well as from within the Principality itself. For the forains themselves, many of whom have no fixed residence and move between fairs across the region, Monaco's edition is often singled out as one of the more orderly and well-attended stops on their annual circuit.
