Ferrari driver who hit 190km/h in tunnel avoids prison return

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

A driver who sped through the Louis II tunnel at close to 190 km/h with his teenage daughter in the car has avoided a return to custody.

The driver of a Ferrari 296 GTB was clocked travelling at almost 190 km/h through the Louis II tunnel on 1 March, on a stretch of road where the limit is 50 km/h, according to Monaco-Matin. His 14-year-old daughter was in the passenger seat at the time.

Three other road users, travelling by e-scooter, scooter and bicycle, narrowly avoided being caught up in the incident as the Ferrari passed through the tunnel, one of the busiest links between the port area and Fontvieille.

The case has since been heard by the Monaco courts, with the driver avoiding a return to prison despite the severity of the speed recorded. The tunnel, used daily by residents, delivery vehicles and commuters moving between the eastern and western ends of the Principality, has previously been flagged for speeding incidents given its straight run and limited visibility of pedestrians and light vehicles at junctions.
