Fake police officer arrested after targeting retired couple

By Zak Jackson, MonacoViews Editorial

An 18-year-old man was detained by Monaco police on 23 June 2026 after attempting to defraud an elderly couple by impersonating an officer.

Monaco police arrested an 18-year-old man on Tuesday 23 June after he allegedly posed as a police officer in an attempt to defraud a retired couple. The suspect was taken into custody and his detention has been extended until Thursday 25 June to allow investigators to pursue further enquiries.

The case is a reminder that scams involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers remain an active threat, including in the Principality. Residents, particularly older ones, are advised to ask for official identification before engaging with anyone claiming to represent the police, and to contact Monaco's Sûreté Publique directly on 17 if they have any doubts about a caller's identity.
